Nonna Rosa (Now Basil & Bourbon - New Ownership)
About This Spot
Stepping into Basil & Bourbon, the fresh incarnation of what was once Nonna Rosa, feels like arriving at a cherished neighborhood hideaway where approachable warmth meets a hint of old-world charm. Nestled in the heart of Okatie Village, this restaurant offers a relaxed yet attentive pace that invites guests to settle in and savor the company, the space, and of course, the meal unfolding at the table.
The atmosphere strikes a balance between casual comfort and genuine care. It’s the kind of place where servers move with thoughtful attentiveness, helping to create a quietly reassuring rhythm to the evening—even when the room fills up with the hum of eager diners. There’s a softness here, from the welcoming smiles to the subtle clinking of wine glasses, that encourages lingering conversations and heartfelt moments.
Food here is a shared experience rooted firmly in traditional Italian flavors, with familiar favorites and thoughtful twists that feel like home-cooked meals passed down through generations. Whether it’s the fragrant garlic mingling with clam juices in a simple pasta sauce, or the richness of a slow-cooked veal dish, the menu invites exploration without pressure. Homemade bread arrives warm to the table, setting the tone for a meal that gently unfolds, dish by dish, in a way that never feels rushed or formal.
There’s a sincere attention to seasonality and quality, with housemade touches that reflect a kitchen capable of both comfort and subtle inventiveness. The wine list complements the food with approachable selections by the glass, encouraging discovery over a casual sip or two. For dessert, you might find yourself drawn in by the soft allure of a cannoli shell filled with sweet ricotta or a classic tiramisu that lingers just long enough on the palate to signal the meal’s satisfying end.
Visitors often speak to the genuine connections they feel here—from the warmth of the hospitality to the welcoming nods that follow when you return. It’s a place with enough personality to stand out but enough humility to make you feel like part of its story. Basil & Bourbon doesn’t shout; it invites you gently to be present and enjoy moments that remind you how comforting a well-made meal can be.

We loved our dinner here! We started with the Calamari appetizer, perfectly fried! My husband had Veal Parmesean and I had Rigatoni Ala Vodka. Both were cooked perfectly and so delicious!! Our servers were Chris and Shannon. Both were working their tails off!! It was also nice to see the bartender help out refilling drinks since Chris and Shannon were busy. If/when we're in the area again we'll definitely be back.

We went here a while ago and had an amazing time. Wonderful atmosphere, the staff were friendly and accommodating of my vegetarian diet. They made our night special after a tough week with Hurricane Helene, and we loved the food!

After living in Italy for 4 years, 32 years ago, I don't eat Italian in the USA. My wife wanted Italian and begged me to take her. I half-heartedly search the choices for Italian restaurants and this seemed to have the best chance of authenticity and taste. You all!!! This place was amazing. The atmosphere reminds me just of an Italian restaurant overseas. This is like the front part of a restaurant where the mafia brings their family for dinner and celebrations lol. The place is nice and cozy! The food choices are very similar to what you would see in Italy.... not like a lot of fakes with everything coming with some version of a tomato based sauce....or appetizers that don't have antipasti, calamari, bruschetta, etc. The owner is very active in the store, meaning he's seating folks, taking orders, and talking with guests, in between bites of food at the bar. This guy is from Naples, about 2 hours north of where I used to live. I mean, this guy is so authentic, you can barely understand his English if you're not used to foreign accents. The service was excellent.... the food is superb...I ate so fast, my 11 year old son made fun of me! I'll definitely be going back! **************************************************** After reading some other reviews, I felt it necessary to comment on the wait time to get your food. Our appetizer was a cold dish, so it arrived fast. Our meals were hot plates, so it took barely longer than expected of a typical wait time at other restaurants. Keep in mind, 1, we were seated about 15 minutes before it got a little crowded. 2, the food was freshly made, so it wasn't the reheated food you normally get.

Reservations are definitely suggested for busy hours and on weekends. Very understaffed when we went just two people seating, serving and working the bar. Both were very nice and kept apologizing for the wait to be seated and attended. Food came fast and was not bad. Sauce was definitely the highlight, 90% sure noodles were pre-made product. Ordered the shrimp scampi and shrimp fettuccine.

Spread the word about this restaurant! This was the best Italian restaurant I've been to other than in Italy. Peppe, the owner who is from Naples, is inspirational. He had a bad health problem in 2016 and has just recently recovered. He has come back with an awesome restaurant. The best tomato sauce, wonderful bread and olive oil, delicious burrata salad and bomba for dessert was so enjoyable in a restaurant that lent itself, with it's relaxing ambience, to focusing on the food. The service was great, especially considering that we went after a once in a generation ice and snow storm. Great vegetarian options. Highly recommend and can't wait to come back!

Recently visited with a group of 4 and overall it was a great experience. The drinks were great. The wine list is not very extensive but the prices were very good. Many great values on the list. Service from Alicia was the best. The atmosphere was not very Italian, but it was fine. The entrees were very good and good size servings. Veal Saltimbocca and Parpadelle were the best we had. Met the owner which was a treat.

Came here with my husband after Helene hit Augusta really hard and we came down to Savannah until the power was restored. Delicious food and great hospitality made us forget the chaos after the hurricane. The owner is super nice. Highly recommend if you want Italian food while visiting the area - great food for both omnivores (me) and vegetarians (my husband).
